What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into your phone. You download a mobile plan as software — no plastic card to insert — and get the same cellular data connection as a physical SIM. ByeRoaming travel eSIMs are prepaid data plans you install by QR code or iPhone quick install, then enable when you land.

How it differs from a physical SIM

  • No store visit or card swap when you change countries
  • You can keep your home SIM for calls/SMS while using travel data
  • Multiple eSIM profiles can sit on one unlocked, eSIM-capable phone

Next steps: Check which devices support eSIM, then browse destinations or install guides for iPhone and Android.

Which devices support eSIM?

ByeRoaming eSIMs work on unlocked phones that support eSIM: typically iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, and many other recent Androids. Carrier-locked phones may block eSIM installs even if the hardware supports it.

Quick check

  1. iPhone: Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → look for Add eSIM / Add Cellular Plan.
  2. Android: Settings → Network & Internet (or Connections) → look for Add mobile plan / Download a SIM instead.
  3. Confirm the phone is unlocked with your home carrier before travel.

What countries/regions are covered?

We offer eSIM coverage in over 200 countries and regions worldwide. Our network includes major destinations across all continents, ensuring you stay connected wherever you travel. Coverage varies by plan type - some plans cover specific countries, while others offer regional or global coverage.

Why is my eSIM not working?

If your ByeRoaming eSIM shows no bars or no data, start with line and roaming settings: enable the travel eSIM, set it as the cellular data line, turn on Data Roaming for that line only, then toggle Airplane Mode. Most “installed but offline” cases are fixed by those steps or by manual network selection.

Checklist

  1. Confirm the travel eSIM is on and selected for Cellular Data.
  2. Enable Data Roaming on the travel line (not necessarily on your home SIM).
  3. Toggle Airplane Mode on/off, or restart the phone.
  4. Verify you are in a covered country for that plan (destinations).
  5. Check the plan has not expired and still has data.
  6. Try manual network selection if the phone stays on “No service”.
  7. Reinstall only as a last resort — some profiles cannot be reused after deletion.

How does an eSIM work?

An eSIM works like a traditional SIM, but the carrier profile is downloaded over the internet. After you buy a ByeRoaming plan, you install the profile (QR or App quick install) while on Wi‑Fi. When you enable the travel line abroad, your phone attaches to a local partner network and uses prepaid data.

  1. Purchase a country or regional plan in the ByeRoaming App.
  2. Install the eSIM over Wi‑Fi before you rely on it.
  3. On arrival, turn on the travel eSIM for cellular data (and Data Roaming on that line if prompted).
  4. For most plans, validity starts on first local network connection — not at purchase.

Can I use an eSIM on multiple devices?

No — each ByeRoaming eSIM plan is for one device. After you install the profile on a phone, you generally cannot move the same plan to a second phone. Buy a separate plan for each traveler or device.

You can still install multiple different eSIM plans on one compatible phone (up to the device limit) and switch which line uses cellular data. Hotspot lets other devices share that phone’s connection without a second eSIM.

If install fails after a device change, see Why is my eSIM not working?.
