What does “Unable to Activate eSIM” mean on iPhone?

“Unable to Activate eSIM” on iPhone usually means the download or carrier activation failed — often due to no Wi‑Fi, a carrier lock, an already-used QR code, or a temporary carrier/Apple provisioning issue.

Try this

  1. Connect to stable Wi‑Fi (not captive hotel portals if possible).
  2. Confirm the iPhone is unlocked and supports eSIM (XS or newer).
  3. Restart the iPhone, then retry Add eSIM / the ByeRoaming quick install.
  4. If the QR was already scanned on another device, it may not work again — contact support for a replacement if eligible.
  5. Remove a failed incomplete plan from Cellular settings only if support advises it, then retry.
  6. Update iOS and retry without a VPN.
